Entering the Blog World

Ah, the blogosphere. So many pages with so little useful content. Will this be more of the same barely-readable drivel? Hopefully not.

Oh, But Who?

Karina Hamalainen and Jessie Birks started this blog in June of 2006 to bring a new kind of perspective to content on ye olde web.

Jessie Birks

An advertising copywriter and bicycle addict, Jessie has been watching films for naught but twenty-seven years. His experience ranges from horror to rom-com, almost entirely excluding anime.

Karina Hamalainen

Miss Hamalainen is an aspiring journalist, attending NYU’s SHERP program in the pursuit of a master’s degree. Watching movies is her self-proclaimed “favorite thing.”

Unique Perspective

Example: Jessie and Karina are both home in New Jersey for Christmas break. Once Jessie finishes watching Groundhog Day for the zillionth time, he calls Karina to see what she’s doing. “What are you doing?” asks Jessie. “Just got done watching a movie,” replies Karina. “What movie?” — Groundhog Day.

Oh Bill Murray, how we love you.

So, how does two people doing exactly what they’d be doing together, while apart, qualify them to review things?

Qualifications

Not that you need to know in order for us to have your full attention and trust, but we’re HBO subscribers. That’s right. On top of that, we’ve got a Netflix account. And not your run-of-the-mill Netflix account - we’re allowed to have three movies at a time.

Top that Ebert and Roper.

What’s more, we can tell you what movie is the best one on. Yep. Got ten movies playing on HBO? Can’t decide? Well, we’ll help you out.

Steps To A Good Movie Experience

1. If one of the movies has Bruce Willis, that’s the best one, put it on. Even if it’s Hostage. It’s still the best one.

2. If the movie has Liza Minnelli or Barbra Streisand, don’t watch it. Unless it’s Meet the Fokkers.

3. If you’ve seen the movie before, it’s probably one of the best movies they’re playing. I mean, if you can’t trust your own viewing habits, how can you trust anyone elses?

4. Is The Daily Show on? You should go watch The Daily Show. This is an important detail to remember. So many times I’ve watched a bad movie and missed The Daily Show.

5. Is there an 80’s film on? Those are great. But, beware of Babs and Liza, they worked a lot in that decade: see #2.

6. Do you get the Indepented Films Channel? Check that one out.

7. Do you have either of the Wayne’s World films on DVD? Why not? They’re an excellent back-up plan.

Final Notes

The purpose and scope of this page will continually expand. It will likely include book, website and music reviews, as well as an awful lot of movies.

Regarding Movie Experience #2, I would add “What’s up Doc?”
